About Roscommon Racecourse

Roscommon Racecourse is a racecourse located in the town of Roscommon, County Roscommon; Ireland. Its location is at a crosspoint of three major motorways. So one of the big draws to Roscommon is its ease of travel! Being in the centre of the country has also meant it’s able to draw in fans from all regions.

These two factors alone have been a massive influence on the popularity of Roscommon Racecourse throughout the years. Racing began here unofficially in 1837 and has continued ever since with only a short break during WW2.

Roscommon Racecourse offers up both Flat and Jump racing events throughout the year. Races at Roscommon take place along a right-handed track which is around one mile two furlongs in length. Towards the end of the trail, there’s an uphill sprint to finish off the race. Something pretty familiar to Irish horse racing!

Notable races

Roscommon Racecourse doesn’t see many notable races throughout the year. It only holds one real race that can be considered noteworthy. This is the Kilbegnet Novice Chase, which is a chase race for grade three horses aged over three years older. The KNC runs over a distance of two miles and runs in September.

While there may not be too many races of notoriety at Roscommon Racecourse: this doesn’t stop the venue hosting premium events. Roscommon Racecourse made the big move to renovate its facilities recently. These renovations have changed the landscape of Roscommon racecourse. Everything here is now state of the art and fans will feel truly pampered. The services available include multiple bars as well as a buffet restaurant.

While the races at Roscommon may not be the biggest Ireland has to offer, that’s not the big draw! Roscommon Racecourse is easy to get to; it’s accessible to the entire country, it has world-class facilities, and because of this it draws in huge numbers on race days!
