About Epsom Downs Racecourse
Epsom Downs Racecourse is located in the borough of Epsom, around 12 miles south of London. Epsom Downs has the cool feature of sitting on a hill. So there are some incredible views of the surrounding areas when you arrive!
Epsom Downs Racecourse benefits from being so close to London, meaning it’s busy every race day. This is reflected in the capacity of the venue, which hosts an impressive 120,000 people! The first recorded race held here was back in 1661, so it’s one of the oldest venues too!
Epsom Downs Racecourse can also boast one of the weirdest courses in the UK too. This is mainly down to the shape which could be best described as ‘U’ shaped. Epsom Downs only offers flat racing along its mile-and-a-half track. There are plenty of bends and an undulating track which puts this on the challenging side.
Epsom Downs Racecourse is home to a handful of notable races throughout the year. These take place mostly during April and June, which is when their two big meetings are. There are three notable races in April, each with a distance of around 2000-2500m. The Blue Riband Trial Stakes is the biggest of these and has a purse of £50k.
The June meet lasts for two days and is nicknamed ‘the derby’. This is also the name of the main race at this event. The Derby was first run in 1780 and covers a total distance of 2,420m. Therefore it should be no surprise to hear the purse for this race reaches nearly half a million!
Epsom Downs Racecourse hosts all the facilities you would hope for a top racecourse. There are private booths and restaurants for those looking for luxury. Plus, there are picnic areas and live entertainment as too!
