About Chelmsford City Racecourse
Chelmsford City Racecourse is located in Great Leighs, just north of Chelmsford, Essex. It boasts being the newest racecourse in the UK – and by some margin too! The doors to the racecourse opened in 2008. This hadn’t happened since 1927, so it was quite the event at the time! Unfortunately, trouble followed Chelmsford City racecourse at the start of its tenure, and it went into administration in 2009. It’s doors reopened in 2015 however where it has been hosting events since.
Chelmsford City prides itself on its all-weather Polytrack circuit. Its inspiration has been taken from the Americans and as a result, Chelmsford City has meetings all year round!
Chelmsford City racecourse is oval in shape and covers a distance of just over one mile. The track runs left-handed and offers a reasonably flat surface throughout.
There are notable races which run at Chelmsford City racecourse every year. These are split across three race days in the springtime too. So you’ll have a few fun days to choose from. The first race is the Cardinal Stakes, a one-mile sprint which takes place in April. The second is the Chelmer Fillies’ Stakes, a six-furlong sprint taking place in May. The final of the big races at Chelmsford racecourse is the Queen Charlotte Fillies’ Stakes. This is a seven-furlong sprint taking place in June. Moreover, the first two of these races have prize funds of around £60,000, so they attract some of the area’s bigger talents.
It’s the facilities that might attract the attention of any fan looking to travel, however! Chelmsford City racecourse has laid out their plans to add a casino to their venue. They also offer private boxes and restaurants. Plus they also host plenty of non-racing events throughout the year too!
